#1359 Red Rocket

"Red Rocket" is the latest film from indie filmmaker Sean Baker ("Tangerine", #1199 "The Florida Project"); Baker originally wanted to start a different project, but that couldn't be realized when the pandemic hit. With his screenwriting partner Chris Bergoch, he then came up with the idea for "Red Rocket", the story of a washed-up former porn star retuning to his Texas hometown, where almost no one would be glad that he's back.

And how did you like the film? Did you enjoy the performance by Simon Rex as returnee Mikey, by Bree Elrod as his wife Lexi, and Suzanna Son as teenage donut shop cashier Raylee aka Strawberry (the musician/actress was 26 at the time of filming, by the way). Plus, amateur actress

), aber es war mit zuviel gähnender Leere und schlechten Bildern (muss ein Stilmittel sein, dass das Bildformat permanent falsch wirkte - bestimmt so ein Authetizitätsfakeversuch wie die Schüttelkamera = Holy Crap that!). Aber die Charaktere waren schön schräg, das hat mir dann echt Spass gemacht. Sei es der strunzdoofe Nachbar, der sich aber loyal bis zum Knast gab, oder die schöne Drug Mama - hell yeah, die Familie hat eine Serie verdient - das hatte schon Fargoneske Ansätze. Etwas zuviel Sex für meinen Geschmack, aber im Kontext irgendwie passend. Lewider war das Ende richtig doof, weil es eigentlich kein Ende war, entweder der macht Strawberry zum neuen Pornostar, oder verfault irgendwo in der texanischen Wüste - aber doch nicht einfach aufhören 
OK, auch das passt eigentlich, weil der Beginn ja eigentlich auch so war, einfach reinblenden und die Zuschauer mit dem Geschehen ohne Erklärungen konfrontieren - ist zu Beginn OK, als Ende war es doof.
