#1342 Firebird

Beitrag von Kasi Mir »

"Firebird" is a retelling of a forbidden love between two officers of the red army; it is based on the account provided by one of the officers, Sergey Fetisov, in his memoir "A Story about Roman" which provides the name of the other soldier, a fighter pilot, back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, taking place in soviet-occupied Estonia (plus Moscow). Sergey and Roman fall for each other pretty quickly, but a same-sex relationships in the USSR were punishable by up to five years in prison, all is not smooth sailing from there. In fact, it is about as fas away from smooth sailing as can be. "Firebird" ist the feature film debut of Estonian filmmaker Peeter Rebane, who previously mainly directed a music video for the Pet Shop Boys and a concert special for Robbie Williams; he also adapted the russian story into an english screenplay together with main actor Tom Prior. Here's the trailer:

And how did you like this rather odd entry into our sneak canon? How did you like the story, and the performances by english actor Tom Prior as Sergey, Ukranian actor Oleg Zagorodnii as Roman, plus Russian Actress/Dancers Diana Pozharskaya as Luisa, the woman attached to both soldiers? Please tell us what you thought about this film in a reply to this posting.

Naja...
